The public examination of the doctoral dissertation of Saba Tahaei Yaghoubi, M.Sc. (Eng), will be held on 27 October 2017 at 12.00 at the Aalto University School of Engineering. The title of the dissertation is Size effects on shear deformable beam structures. Field of the dissertation is structural mechanics.

Micro-sized beams are considered as one of the frequently used elements in micro-electro-mechanical devices such as sensors. The classical continuum theory, is not able to predict the behavior of a micro-sized structure properly. Higher-order continuum theories (such as gradient elasticity theory) have been developed in order to overcome this deficiency.

In this thesis, the well-known equations of classical continuum mechanics for isotropic and anisotropic beams are extended as based on the strain and velocity gradient elasticity theory. Since the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory gives accurate results for slender beams only, the formulation derived in this thesis is considering shear deformable beam theories (first and third-order shear deformable beam theories) which can be used for deep beams as well. The equations derived in this thesis, helps to predict the behavior of micro-sized beams in bending, buckling and free vibration better.
