The public examination of the doctoral dissertation of Kenneth Dooley, M.Sc. (Tech.), will be held on 2 March 2018 at 12.00 at the Aalto University School of Engineering. The title of the dissertation is Reintroducing organisational innovations to environmental sustainability - A study of rational innovations that are regularly ignored. Field of the dissertation is built environment, real estate business.

This research focused on sustainability strategies that should be a no-brainer. At first glance you would be forgiven for thinking that these kind of strategies should be implemented without much thought or fuss as doing so just makes sense.

They are not expensive to implement, they do not involve any new or complicated technology and they produce substantial reductions in cost and environmental impact. They do however, introduce new operational methods which change the daily tasks of employees. Like all change, the resultant disruption can receive negative feedback from employees and often results in a short-term reduction in productivity. This initial disruption is surprisingly powerful even though the impact is significantly outweighed by the benefit of the strategy during its lifetime.

These low-low-high-high (low cost, low technology, high impact and high disruption) sustainability strategies were studied in three industries which were retail, telecommunications and real estate. The research analysed cases where companies failed to implement them. The results reveal why these seemingly rational the strategies were not implemented in the past and how to this resistance can be overcome.
