POAC, The International Conferences on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions began in 1971 and since then, it has been held every two years at different international venues. Over the years, POAC has been the mainstay of Arctic engineering conferences and typically attracts over 150 participants to each conference.

The objective of POAC is to improve knowledge of ice-related problems by having scientists and engineers discuss and exchange ideas on relevant topics. In addition to personal communications, one major objective is to have national and international organizations, industries, and research institutes engaged in Arctic and Antarctic work report their work at the POAC Conference.

Everyone is welcome to attend POAC. The conferences have a loyal following since they provide current information on the state-of-the-art of ice engineering in a friendly atmosphere. People who attend POAC Conferences continue to attend on a regular basis.

POAC 2013 will be held on the Aalto University campus in Finland. This is the third POAC in Finland, the earlier ones were 1983 and 1999. The Aalto University campus is in Espoo, about 10 km from the center of Helsinki. The campus area is famous for the architecture and for the concentration of high technology.
