A paper concerned with soft (virtual) sensors, “Estimating nitrate concentration in the post-denitrification unit of a municipal wastewater treatment”, has received an honourable mention in an international congress on automation and process control. The honourable mention in the Best Applications Paper Price series was awarded to five finalists from among 2 400 accepted articles.

The finalist paper deals with the design of an array of soft sensors, which can be used to estimate the nitrate concentration in post-denitirification filter units at Viikinmäki wastewater treatment plant in Helsinki. In case of malfunction, the sensors developed provide a reliable back-up system for the automatic analyzers in operation.
The research team behind the paper published includes Dr Michela Mulas, Lic.Sc. (Tech.) Henri Haimi, and Professor Riku Vahala from the Water Engineering Research group at the Aalto University School of Engineering, Docent Francesco Corona from the Environmental and Industrial Machine Learning Group at the Aalto University Department of Information and Computer Science, as well as Development Engineer Laura Sundell and Head of a Production Unit Mari Heinonen, both from the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Municipal Group
The 18th World Congress of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC2011) was held in Milan at the turn of August and September.
