Aihe: High performance joints in hardwood
The good availability of hardwood resources in central Europe and the excellent strength properties of such timber species enable the engineers to design and build more and more appealing structures in hardwood. One of the challenges when design such structures is to allow for a good transfer of very high loads between the hardwood elements by means of high performance joints. The relatively new timber species beech requires the definition of material parameters and property values for the application of design equations for the engineers. The high density and different engineered wood products are some of the parameters that require special consideration when applying e.g. screws, threaded rods or dowels in joints in hardwood. Within a research project at ETH Zurich, the potential of high performance joints in hardwood are currently studied.
About the lecturer:
Robert Jockwer is Senior Scientist at the Institute for Structural Engineering at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. He studied Civil Engineering at the RWTH in Aachen, Germany and continued with his PhD studies at the chair of timber structures at ETH. He is a well recognized expert in the fields of fracture mechanics and reinforcement of timber structures.Since beginning of 2016 Dr. Jockwer is involved in the engineering company Swiss Timber Solutions AG bringing newest technologies developed at ETH Zurich into practice.
